Gabes Governorate, in Southern Tunisia, contains a great variety of natural landscapes, including mountains, coastal areas, deserts, oases, and forests. Along its coastline is a great abundance of marine life. Tourists are also drawn to the traditional Souq in nearby Jara, the beautiful beaches, and the ancient underground city of Matmata.

Yet, the city of Gabes also contains the largest industrial zone in the country, with vast factories producing cement, chemical products, and bricks. However, these factories add little to the local economy, and, in the process, cause great damage to the environment.

Chemicals such as phosphogypsum, nitrates, fluorides and other pollutants have seriously degraded the air, water, and agricultural land of the area. Residents of Gabes residents frequently complain about air pollution, the most obvious form of this problem, but the consequences of pollution can also be felt across the city in deeper, more insidious ways.

According to Ahlem Ismail, President of the Tunisian Association for the Support of Children, levels of pollution-related illnesses, such as rising infertility, breathing problems, congenital malformation, and miscarriages, have greatly increased in the area. One example of this was the tragic death of Arwa and Dhia Al Cherif (aged 5 and 11 respectively), who died due to a severe liver condition in May 2014.

According to Al Jazeera, their parents alleged that their illness had been caused by the Tunisian Chemical Group, who they claimed had dumped 13,000 tonnes of industrial waste in the area where they lived. The deaths caused controversy in Gabes, with many parents and civil society groups seeking to protest the presence of these companies, and raise awareness about the problem of pollution in the city.

“The environmental situation is disastrous in Gabes because of the factories in the industrial zone that dump pollutants into the sea,” Nader Chkiwa, President of Association for the Protection of Sidi Abdel Salem Beach Gabes, told Tunisia Live, “The Tunisian Chemical Group in Gabes does not respect international standards, and their waste disposal methods are illegal.” He added that environmental catastrophe loomed on the

horizon, as much of the infrastructure of the Tunisian Chemical Group facility was an old and at risk of collapse, a scenario that could cause a major industrial accident in the future.

Samir Hamidi, Youth Leader in Tunisian Red Crescent Gabes, said to Tunisia Live, “the Chemical Group has destroyed the environment, increasing the risk of diseases and other illnesses, and killing Marine Life” He also said, “The Chemical Group has the money to invest in Gabes and bring about development, but instead they just neglect this region,” adding that the pollution levels were deterring tourists and investors and thus contributing to unemployment.

Activist groups have, since the 2011 revolution, gotten increasingly better at organizing and putting pressure on the government. Twenty five non-governmental organizations have united to form the Nheb N3ish (‘I Want to Live’) movement. Safouan kbibiya, a leading organizer in the movement, told Tunisia Live that growing numbers of residents of Gabes were mobilizing over the issue.

The group even persuaded Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki to visit Gabes on June 5 to sign a petition declaring that the area was suffering from environmental degradation. Marzouki told Tunisia’s state news agency, TAP, that the situation in Gabes was “disastrous” and that “the state must assume responsibility and swiftly address the situation.” He further promised that the government and chemical groups would meet activists’ demands for a long-term roadmap to deal with the problem. Residents of Gabes hope that such a promise can finally reverse the damage wrought upon the region.
